Today I want to share a project that feels especially cozy to my heart. In the Scrappy & Spectacular issue 69 of A Needle Pulling Thread magazine, I have a fun and functional tutorial for a whimsical cat heating pad made from soft flannel scraps.

This little cat came from that happy place where usefulness and charm meet. I always love making projects that are sweet to look at, but even more than that, I love when they can become part of everyday life. This one is not just a cute fabric friend. It is something made to bring comfort.
The heating pad is filled with natural cherry pits, which hold warmth beautifully once heated. It can be tucked into your hands on a cold day, rested on sore muscles, or simply kept nearby when you need a little extra coziness. There is something very special about a handmade project that feels gentle and practical at the same time.
Because it is meant to be warmed in the microwave, I made it with 100% cotton fabric and 100% cotton batting for safety. For this project, I chose flannel because I love everything about it — the softness, the warmth, the familiar comforting feel. Flannel has a way of making even the simplest project feel tender and inviting.

And of course, I could not resist making it scrappy. That is one of my favorite parts. Mixing little pieces of flannel and letting them come together into one small character always feels a bit magical to me. Each combination gives the cat its own mood, its own quiet personality. It is such a lovely way to use treasured leftovers and turn them into something with meaning.
I also think this project makes a beautiful gift. It has that handmade feeling people remember — something thoughtful, useful, and made with care. But honestly, it is also the kind of thing that is very easy to keep for yourself.

Seeing this cozy little cat printed in A Needle Pulling Thread was a truly happy moment for me. It is always special to watch an idea travel from a few scraps of fabric to the pages of a magazine, and then into the hands of other makers.
Behave yourself quilty!
With love,
Olesya
